Here is a roundup of news and blogs of interest to Free Exchange readers:
FrontPageMag.com has an article entitled, "Academic Freedom Should Be Apolitical." The author disagrees with David Horowitz on a number of issues, but nevertheless agrees with Horowitz that many faculty [impose] their views on unwilling but impressionable students. However, the overall tone of the column is one that seeks common ground, which is quite a welcome change from the usual ranting at FrontPage.
PhiBetaCons comes to many of the same conclusions on Intelligent Design as Dr. Michael Shermer (as we reported last week).
Speaking of ID, the Panda's Thumb keeps an eye on things as they spot ID in the GOP Iowa State Platform.
And Campus Magazine laments the lack of a Nobel Prize for the U.S. in the "soft" academic field of literature. Apparently this is because "American ‘culture' is saturated with insipid nudity and mindless entertainment." (The Janet Jackson "wardrobe-malfunction" would appear to be a symbol of this decline). Higher education is also at fault for the failure of an American to win the Nobel Prize in the field of peace, since "students are indoctrinated into one train of thought without any ability to engage in any serious debate."
