From Lebanon, to be exact. In this book review of Professors Matthew W. Finkin and Robert C. Posts For the Common Good: Principles of American Academic Freedom, one can get a sense of not only how the evolution of academic freedom has made the American higher education system the envy of the world, but also the importance of this beacon of free exchange to those overseas. The reviewer, to my mind, doesn't overly-idealize the American university - I think he's realistic about the shortcomings that exist - but it does demonstrate that even overseas, people have a good sense about what, exactly, is and isn't a problem in American higher education.
