The following is a guest commentary by Professor Kurt Smith of Bloomsburg University who recently debated David Horowitz. There is also a link to Professor Smith’s opening comments at the debate in the final paragraph of the post.

Dancing with Dave
I met Horowitz in the green-room, which I should add is actually green, about five minutes before the debate. He barged into the room flanked by police officers, who were clearly being directed by a tall, well-dressed bodyguard, who I later found is named Floyd. No pies would find a home on Horowitz’s face tonight.

Horowitz paced back and forth, chomping frantically on what I’m pretty sure was Aspirgum. The room filled with the faint odor of St. Joseph’s baby aspirin. I caught him eyeballing me every couple of seconds, though it was clear that he didn’t want me to notice that he was interested. I offered my hand and he said, "Hya." The university President, tonight’s moderator, formally introduced us. He looked at me and said something like, "Yeh, yeh." The President asked that we shake hands. He refused, saying, "We already did." The pacing started up again.

While standing in the wings—Horowitz, me, and Floyd—photographers snapped pictures, their flashes resembling a strobe light in need of adjustment. Floyd looked around the curtain and said to Horowitz, "Looks like a good crowd." (There were about 1,000 folks in attendance). Horowitz smugly replied, "What else do they have to do around these parts," referring to the fact that Bloomsburg University is located in a rural area of Pennsylvania.

After opening statements and Horowitz’s um-teenth allegation that professors indoctrinate and don’t educate, I demanded in my reply that he enlighten us on the difference between indoctrination and education—he being the expert on such things. He launched into a tirade about liberal government, and how something called welfare was racist and had destroyed all "the blacks," as he put it. This, of course, immediately answered my demand. I looked around, and clearly the thousand of us there in that auditorium now knew the difference between indoctrination and education—liberal welfare destroyed the blacks? I responded by noting that the largest number of people on welfare are white children. This was a piece of trivia that I thought would never in my wildest dreams be important to know. But, as I am becoming aware, knowing such trivial facts is all it takes to defeat Horowitz. The simple truth. All the Aspirgum in the world cannot stand against it. "Q.E.D, Dave, Q-E-D!"
