This just in, Candace de Russy has no sense of humor. It is true. De Russy, who is a trustee for the State University of New York, prolific PhiBetaCon and lead David Horowitz lackey in the Empire State can't take a joke.
Free Exchange coalition member, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), publishes a higher education newspaper, AFT On Campus which includes a column called Academic Freedom Forum. The October forum includes a short little piece called "Name that zealot" in which readers are asked to identify the source of the following quote:
Today, students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities.
Two of the multiple choice answers are Candace de Russy and David Horowitz. After an explanation as to why these might be good answers, the real answer, of course, is revealed: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of Iran.
Well, the ever watchful Candace noticed the piece on AFT's website and fired off a response. De Russy accuses AFT of:
piling on misinformation designed to associate me and Horowitz with Ahmadinejad's "crackdown on free speech in Iranian higher education" and "his campaign to restrict [students'] academic freedom,"
Um, no. I am pretty sure the point was that it sounded like something that either de Russy or Horowitz could have said and that is funny (albeit scary at the same time). The ever dramatic de Russy goes on to say that:
It would seem that that the AFT is in the hands of people so confused and blinded by the leftist "party line" that they cannot distinguish between an anti-Semitic despot who supports terrorism and true liberals such as Horowitz and me, who object to the current despotism on campuses.
Wait a minute, did she just suggest that faculty on campus are despots just like the president of Iran?! That just isn't a fair comparison! Oh wait, she must be joking! How funny.
