The Roanoke News notes the introduction of a bill in the Virginia state legislature which is designed to "protect diversity of opinion" at Virginia's public higher education institutions. House Bill 1643, introduced by Delegate Steve Landes, would require the reporting "of the steps [each public college] is taking to ensure intellectual diversity and the free exchange of ideas."
The bill also includes some vague language, such as the requirement that schools "develop hiring, tenure, and promotion policies that protect individuals against political viewpoint discrimination." The bill doesn't mention what exactly constitutes "political viewpoint discrimination."
More importantly, however, was Delegate Landes's acknowledgement that "he isn't proposing [the bill] in reaction to any problems he sees at Virginia's universities. He just hopes his bill will be a ‘starting point' for a discussion about how different viewpoints are presented in higher education and simply wants to gather information. It doesn't mandate universities to take any specific actions to address the issue on campus; it only asks that colleges report what they are doing."
In other words, there is no problem with "political viewpoint discrimination" or any other forms of alleged liberal bias on Virginia's public campuses. Finally, the bill does call for some positive changes, most notably that each public higher ed institution "establish clear campus policies to ensure freedom of the press for students."
