As most of you undoubtedly know, the Terrorism Awareness Project (a spin-off of the David Horowitz Freedom Center) is promoting "Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week" on campuses around the country during the week of October 22. In response, the Free Exchange on Campus coalition has released a statement on the events. While we often disagree with some of the tactics that he employs, we do not believe that the right response is to squelch free speech and disrupt his events:
Regardless of people's agreement or disagreement
with Horowitz and those hosting these events, we urge faculty and students to
express their opinions by fostering vigorous and substantive debate on campus. We
believe views should be backed with reasoned arguments and should engage as
many people as possible. This is a far better response than attempting to
prevent campus events from happening or speakers from being able to speak.
