Are attacks on academics back in central PA?

Republican lawmakers are blasting Millersville University of Pennsylvania for allowing Prof. Bill Ayers (University of Illinois Chicago) to speak on campus.  Though quite respected for his work on education reform, Ayers became controversial this fall when the John McCain campaign used his loose association with Pres. Obama to paint Obama as a terrorist sympathizer (Ayers is also well known for having been one of the founding members of the 1960's Weather Underground).

Pennsylvania has of course been down this road before-attacks from Lancaster Co. legislators prompting a year-long investigation into academic freedom in higher education.  While the investigation yielded no evidence that legislation was warranted and in fact found that academic freedom violations are rare, it appears some legislators weren't satisfied.  Fortunately, for the time being it appears that the University is sticking to its guns and not canceling the speech.
